Howdy Everyone
New to the tribe network, but not to martial arts. I am currently researching and practicing Eight Immortal, or Drunken Boxing. Anyone else in the San Francisco doing this, or have info to share on the style.

Re: Drunken Kung fu
Wed, November 28, 2007 - 3:25 PMDo you have to be drunk to practice, or is it an illusion to throw your opponent off? -

Re: Drunken Kung fu
Wed, November 28, 2007 - 6:42 PMits an illusion, but its also a great way to develop added flexibility and fluidity.

Re: Drunken Kung fu
Wed, November 28, 2007 - 7:19 PMIt is fun. Its disappointing though because theu DKF guy spends so much time dancing trying to 'sell' the illusion to someone who knows better that he only gets off a couple of techniques. We dont really get a chance to see what he capable of. Not much though considering he thinks its a good idea to body shot a kyokushin guy.... -

Re: Drunken Kung fu
Wed, November 28, 2007 - 7:50 PMtraditionally eight immortals is a northern system that is meant to compliment an already skilled fighter. My Sifu is quite skilled at drunken boxing and I assure you it is deadly and effective. But it should not be taught to just anyone. Many of it's movements and techs are usless unless one has iron palm and iron body skills as well as an arsenal of kicks, strikes tumbling and breakfall methods must be mastered. One should have at least a black sash in another kungfu system otherwise it will probably be just that... a dance. -

Fine points, but not an answer to my question, just an unsolicited opinion. -

Re: Drunken Kung fu
Sat, December 1, 2007 - 8:25 AMPerhaps I was less then clear, I am just looking for folks who are currently practicing the style, not just critics of the style.
I do not think the style is "useless" without Iron palm or Iron body training (though I do see how they would be very helpful). I do understand that Eight Immortals is rarely a stand alone art, but Ba Gua (IMHO) is a better base style then Iron Palm.
To be even more specific I am looking to find if anyone has followed Lan Cai He style of the Eight Immortals, and how those forms compare to Lu Don Bin or any of the other forms.
The video shows someone using Drunken Boxing using Kuan Zui stance (Wildly Drunk) The movements are very erratic and are meant to deceive your opponent that you are falling down drunk, but other stances like Wei Zui (slightly drunk) and Zui Xin (Sober) are more balanced and less like a "dance". Since I am currently studying Lan Cai He I use the Wei Zui stance. -

Re: Drunken Kung fu
Mon, December 3, 2007 - 8:12 PMheh, there are many types of iron palm and body I was just saying that some type is needed to be a competent fighter at DKF. Ba Gua would make an excellent base style but make no doubt that Ba Gua has it's own types of body/hand conditioning ie: Iron Palm and Iron Body (like Treeshaking) -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Drunken Kung fu
Tue, December 4, 2007 - 7:33 AMwell I guess we will have to agree to disagree. There are many styles that can be used as a base for Drunken Forms and they do not have to be Iron Palm or Iron anything to be effective.
