I've some awesome wooden nunchucks I've had for years and I picked them up today and had so much fun with them.
Never realized what a cool meditation it was.
Can anyone offer any links or advice on progressing nunchuckku technique?

Re: nunchucks
Fri, October 12, 2007 - 12:40 PMlow traffic here mate - likely those who read it simply gots nothing. Check out Amazon.com - should be a few books on the subjects. Of course if you want to get any better than a casual rube, then showing up at a school would be needed. I would thing a school of Karate with it's Okinawan roots intact should teach some nunchaku techniques and kata. I was tempted to snark out and ask you what your instructor said - which implies of course that not starting with a competant instructor is a waste of time. You also may look into escrima - some folks hav nunchaku technique - the weapon is known as Tabak Toyuk in escrima/arnis. (it was tabak toyuk technique that Dan Inosanto introduced Bruce Lee to.) Finally if you want to do more than just look cool twirling it about, you should find folks to spar live with one against similiar and other weapons - The Dog Brothers are well-known for their full-contact stickfighting matches using minimal armor. Be aware that while it's possible to block with one, it is much easier to block with a rigid weapon. Also flexible weapons rely totally on speed to do damage - all impacts are essentially ballistic in nature - with a rigid weapon, one can transfer one's own weight into the impact as well - it'd the difference between punching someone and throwing a chopped off fist at the opponent. (nunchacku can get going faster than one can usually throw due to the whipping arc effect, but the comparison is still valid) -

Fri, October 12, 2007 - 4:57 PMalso i would say just think about it a lot, and try to discover the techniques for yourself. because what one man can do, another can do also.
circles, straight lines, different training exercises, basic movements... i wonder what these things can do???

Sat, October 13, 2007 - 12:10 PMAh. Distract and overcome. Good technique... however, I wouldn't do it. Maybe it's a girl thing?
For the original post. Nunchucks are a simple weapon. An extension of the body. If your body is trained to be it's best, the weapon will respond. Books can help. Self discovery can be enlightening (regardless of the venue).
Keep training. -

Re: nunchucks
Sat, October 13, 2007 - 12:28 PMI like them, but I prefer the Kusari Fundo with its longer chain, shorter handles and for the fact that you can hide the entire weapon in the palm of your hand or sleeve and strike with it like a short range projectile. -

Re: nunchucks
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 12:41 AMtry challenging yourself by weilding one in each hand. Also you perfect your fighting ability only using one arm as if your other arm were injured and you still had to face multiple opponents. Next, get some old tires and stack them . then you must do your swinging repertoir and actually hit the tires as hard as you can to see how the sticks react when you hit people and get the sticks back into your formation.
I love nunchaku. they have saved my ass back in highschool from many times I have been jumped. To me personally, I know I can do well against many as long as I have a sturdy pair. I have been developing my skills lately using them against staff, and others also armed with nunchaku

Re: nunchucks
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 12:58 AMtwo important things you should know about this particular weapon, if you are using it for combat instead of show.
1)hold the weapon at the end of one stick. by end I mean the end away from the rope. leave about an inch and a half of stick left.
2)don't try to hit the opponent with the free hanging stick. this is a recipe for disaster. instead, hit the target with the stick that you are holding on to. -

Re: nunchucks
Sat, May 17, 2008 - 9:05 PMthat is a very new idea to me. I will try it. It does take away from the distance and range I am used to operating with though -

Re: nunchucks
Mon, May 26, 2008 - 5:00 PMIt does reduce range, you are right. but what you gain in control is definitely worth it, and you can develop almost unstopable strikes. It's like getting two strikes for every one you execute, because the free end connects in unexpected ways, even hitting the opponent from behind. On top of that, I kind of think of nunchucks as primarily grappling weapons, so for the way I use the weapon, the distance tradeoff is not so important. -
