versus Aikido

This weekend, I'll be sparring with an uchideshi who trains in Aikido.

I have several years of training in Karatedo, and a year of Tang Soo Do.

Any tips or suggestions?

many of their throw techs require a side step with a joint lock. stay on him and don't give him allot of time to counter. also keep your techs as varied and complex as possible because he could be quite practiced against basic strikes. I also agree with greg don't leave your limbs out to long (don't over extend)

Pay very careful attention to distance.

Karate is perhaps not the best art against karate. Im not as familiar with the other art you study, but it might be helpful if it was more focused on multi directional attacking and/or grappling with reversals on holds. To beat somebody in aikido with the fast-hard approach you have to be a LOT faster, not just a little. Its easier to fall off the line than it is to track. Chances are he wont attack, but let you come to him.

Depending on the skill level of the practitioner you can sometimes defeat an aikido technique by giving into it then overshooting it and switching directions. What I mean by that is dont tense up and fight it if he has you, because chances are you will go down if he manages to get a hold of you. Sometimes you can allow yourself to be thrown then do a switch technique as you roll out of the attack, perhaps grabbing his arm with your other hand and grabbing him with your legs as you are rolling over your shoulder as you are being thrown.

You will want to practice your rolls (Ukemi). If you are going to fight somebody who constantly uses jujitsu grappling with circular footwork you should spend a little extra time taking falls and rolling. Its the only way to ensure that you will not be damaged by the throw so you can keep fighting.

Dont over extend. I would use feign strikes and observe how he distances himself. If hes good he will barely move until the last fraction of a second. If not, you can possibly manipulate his footwork then strike as he is already stepping to one direction which somewhat limits his freedom of movement.

Strike fast but dont fall into the trap of trying to over extend to make contact. If you cant reach, then just retract and try again.

Your probably more experienced than I am in general, but I have trained in both aikido and karate and tried techniques from one in the other dojo multiple times.

Typo. Karate is perhaps not what I would choose to use against aikido. Forward moving frontal fast hard attacks is exactly what aikido is good at defeating. The redeeming quality of karate vs other hard striking arts is the fast retraction which is an advantage in not getting caught.

I disagree. I think that karate is at an equal fooing as any other art against aikido. Karate isnt necessarily just forward moving frontal attacks. Many practitioners mistake this style of fighting for karate, but that is really just a beginners understanding of karate, imho. I would avoid grappling AT ALL costs. The more contact you have with the aikido player the better opportunity that have for trips/throws etc et al... Im sorry this post is truncated, short on time, will follow up tonite.

    Sparring?

Hmmm....I suspect you won't have any problems at all, so long as you don't play by Aikido rules. I studied it for years - it's good for what it is, but it isn't designed for open sparring or fighting.

However, if he tries to punch you, he isn't playing by Aikido rules, either. If he does that, attack the low-line.

Let us know how it goes!

Well, its true that I never got my black belt in Shotokan karate, so my views might be a little limited. The emphasis does still seem to be on forward striking, even if its not "just" forward striking. I dont think that reversals are out of the question against aikido people. I wouldnt recomend charging for a grapple like they do in shoo fighting or BBBJ, but reversals can be viable if you have studied any Jujitsu or similar arts.

The two points I am most sure about is dont overextend to reach your target and practice your rolls.

Yikes...i take it you dont have any BJJ training? Thats too bad...in my experience Aikido has a huge weakness against ground fighting and if you could close the distance and get him on his back before he lays into you, you could easily throw and armbar or choke and end it...
But alas...that was no help at all to you...
        Sorry lol'

I give a good bet that you will win, and here is why. I am an Aikidoka and so far, I can say that Aikido is a very effective DEFENSIVE art. Most Aikido techniques involve getting out oh holds, avoiding a punch (Not a jab), avoiding a thrusts. That is why I don't believe that Aikido is meant for sparring. You can see the true beauty of Aikido when an Aikidoka is to defend him or herself against miltiple attackers All in all, my OPINION on the matter is that Aikido is not designed for sparring.

Just back from CO. I didn't actually get to spar the uchideshi, as it turned out. However, I did get a chance to train twice in Aikido Nippon Kan dojo in Denver, a very impressive schjool. I did use many of the suggestions posted here in my training there. *smile*

Thank you for the great suggestions. *bow*
